Mission Statement

Our Mission is to provide quality service to inter-departmental agencies, enabling these agencies to perform their duties effectively and efficiently; to provide requested services to citizens and other departments in a courteous, helpful and timely manner, maintaining high standards of professionalism.

Staffing

The Communications Center is under the direction of the Communications Center Manager, who reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police, Administration.  There is an Assistant Communications Center Manager and three Shift Supervisors.  The Department has one Administrative Assistant.

The Center is authorized at 36 Dispatchers.  Entry level is a Public Safety Dispatcher I (PSDI).  Once the PSDI level of training, experience, and performance meets criteria, the dispatcher advances to Public Safety Dispatcher II (PSDII) and assumes additional duties as Lead Dispatcher and Communications Training Officer (CTO).

Responsibility

Communications is a 24/7 operation.  There are three eight-hour shifts:  0600-1400; 1400-2200; 2200-0600.  It has an annual operating budget of over $1,985,000.00.

The Communications Center answers calls and dispatches Police for the City Of Lubbock, population 200,000+.  In addition, the Comm Center is the primary answering point for all 9-1-1 calls in the city, including Fire and EMS.  Calls for Fire and EMS are then transferred to those dispatch centers. The Comm Center handles approximately 35,000 phone calls per month, resulting in over 22,500 police call sheets a month.

PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCHER I

Salary Range:       $11.81 Hourly - $24,564.00 Annually

Reports To:            Police Communications

Qualifications:      Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of a high school diploma, with some experience in a public contact position.  No experience necessary.  Ability to become a certified Telecommunications Operator within one year of employment.  Ability to type 50 words per minute.  Typing test required and results must accompany the application.  Scheduled typing tests are given by the Texas Workforce Commission. This is a 365 day operation.  Various shift schedules include weekends, holidays and on-call assignments, with the possibility of mandatory overtime.  Applicants must pass a Police background investigation.
